Okay, so one of the Dutch ones is on irc://irc.snt.utwente.nl#shd-wk Am I correct?

Can't really help like that, as I am not using IRC from my browser ... but try irc.xs4all.nl as the server? That's the one a Dutch friend of mine is currently using, at least ...

Edit: You do have an IRC client though, do you? (like irssi for unix, or mIRC for Windows, don't know any Mac ones right now but I think there's at least xchat for MacOSX...)

Edit2: There are also web-to-IRC-gateways, one that I know of is http://webchat.xs4all.nl/ :)

Duh, of course I have a client, or I wouldn't have come up with that address. ;)

"Please wait while we process your connection." for minutes and then often an "access denied".

EDIT: okay, this one worked, though it processed my connection for ages before allowing me to actually connect.

Yeah, I saw you, I just wasn't home when you were on ;)
That problem is most likely a problem with a badly configured firewall (either yours, or your providers). The IRC server tries to connect to some ports (ident (113) and some others, I don't remember everything right now, been a long time since I had to troubleshoot that), and if the firewall is configured to ignore the request (instead of rejecting it), the server needs to wait ... and wait ... and wait ... until it finally gets the timeout.

(If that didn't make any sense now, it's probably because I only just came home and haven't had time to collect myself yet. See, that's how important this forum is, first thing I check when the computer goes on ;P)

Okay, but I don't have a firewall, so it must be the router's firewall (I'm wireless). It did this at school and at home, two different wireless networks. Kinda crap. :(

At least I can connect now. :)

IRCnet relies on Port 113, esp. the german servers. The Server itself doesnt open additional ports, it uses those the chat client locally opens.

The server still tries to connect to those ports, and waits a long time for a timeout if a firewall ignores the connection attempt instead of rejecting it (or letting it through).

Could be the router ... could of course be some other reason too than the one I outlined (that one is just common). But, all you need is patience ;) (and if all else fails, there's always the www->irc gateway ;))
