I don't really know if this is the right place to ask, but it seemed most logic to me.
So, is there any particular reason why we can't have avatars, and why there aren't any smileys?
just wondering ;)

Yeah, what Kriegel said. Pages load much faster, it saves me money (I'm paying for the bandwidth ;P), and I've been on the net since times when we had text-only, so I personally don't really like graphical smilies (while I do overuse text smilies all the time...).

I had considered avatars, but couldn't get them to run on my server when I tried, and since I considered them less important, I put that to the back-burner... maybe I'll look into it again.

Ah, ok, just wanted to know :D

I'm kinda used to forums where they do use smileys and avatars, so I was a bit confused :D

You kids these days with your new-fangled smilies and "avatars" whatever the hell those are. (Mostly I just wanted to have the newest post in every forum.)

Actually, I hadn't noticed 'til you said that.

Now that I think of it, I think I like it this way better. No clutter.

And faster loading times. And (if the avatars were stored on this server) less traffic cost for me, and (if the avatars were stored elsewhere) no pages that won't load because one of the external servers is down :)

And I use smilies way too much anyway, so I think it's better that they are just ascii smilies instead of hundreds of little yellow images ;P

I like it this way. The only advantage with avatars is the ability to locate my posts really quickly just by scrolling, but that's no important.

Hey, you could at least support off-site avatars... Saves you bandwidth and everbody's happy that way, right? :)

Not really ... there would still be the problem that if one of the off-site servers is down, the page won't load (this is also one of the reasons I don't want ad buttons or toplist buttons on my main page), plus the problem that I'll have to keep watching that all avatars are appropriate, plus the problem that I (and some others) find avatars simply annoying ;P

The main problem would probably be that the pages would load much slower, because all those images have to be loaded from different servers.

So nah, I can't really be convinced otherwise ;)

I always turn smilies off anyway, and I am me whether I have a picture by my name or not, so it makes no difference to me. It does load faster, too.
